Leadership and effectiveness of academic staff in Makerere University Business School of Makerere University.

The purpose of the study was to put focus on establishing the relationship between the University administrators and the academic staff in Makerere University Business School. i. How does autocratic leadership style influence on the effectiveness of academic staff in Makerere University Business School. ii. How does democratic leadership style influence on the effectiveness of academic staff in Makerere University Business School. iii. How does liaises faire leadership style influence on the effectiveness of academic staff in Makerere University Business School. Academic staff include senior lecturers, junior lecturers, professors, associate professors, since high job performance of academic staffs plays a major role in form of use of varied teaching methodologies, preparing scheme of work, lecture plans, regular tendency and punctuality for lectures. However according to the report of the Deputy Dean academics in a meeting held at the faculty of Education on 1/08 /2008, it was pointed out that the performance of academic staffs was deteriorating. The indication of this problem was the use of poor methodologies, failure to prepare schemes of work and lecture plans and many other indicators. Although there could be other factors leading to the same, the deputy Dean Academics pointed out the leadership styles applied by administrators had no significant role. Basing on the qualitative approach, the researcher used the primary approach data collection which involved observation, the use of interviews and the questionnaire. Due to the limited resources, the study was carried out between the period of four to five months. The context of where the study was the study was carried out was Makerere University Business School which is located in a distance of six kilo meters away from Kampala city centre on Jinja Road. The study concentrated on the administrators and academic staffs at the faculty of education who had served as respondents. They were selected because their job performance was reported to be not effective. In content it was done on the influence of leadership styles which will be related with effectiveness of academic staff.
