Suitability and correctness of a remuneration structure is determined by its ability to enhance job performance. Adequate remuneration motivates workers while inadequate remuneration leads to poor job performance. Makerere University staff are categorised into academic and non academic groups who, include administrators and support staff. Among other factors, it is claimed that the general poor performance of most of the support staff is mainly attributed to the poor remuneration that they receive. Therefore, this study was conducted to establish the types of remuneration received by the support staff in Makerere University and the staff’s opinions about them. It also determined the effect of the received remuneration on the support staff’s job performance and assessed the support staffs’ suggestions about strategies that can be used to improve on the current remunerations. Using questionnaire interviews and in-depth interviews, data was obtained from a sample of 200 support staff that were randomely selected from five faculties of the University. The findings indicated that although the support staff received various types of monetary and non monetary forms of remuneration including basic salary, medical allowance, promotional opportunities and recognition, most staff were dissatisfied with each type of remuneration. Various job aspects including lack of commitment to work, poor quality of work, little time spent at work station, bad conduct at the work place and increased absenteeism were mentioned to be affected by the inadequate remuneration with poor quality of work and wasting time being the most affected. The support staff gave various suggestions that they felt can lead to improvements in their current remuneration including increasing their basic salaries, providing top up allowances, increasing the other forms of allowances with most of them suggesting that there is need to increase the basic salary. It was therefore concluded that the support staff of Makerere University receive poor remuneration which, has affected their job performance. It is therefore suggested that the Universities authorities should examine each type of remuneration and respond in a way that will lead to an increase in staff morale and motivation, consequently increasing the staff’s performance.en_US
