dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the use of problem- based learning enhances creative writing skills in English language in a selected School in Wakiso district. The study was based on three specific objectives, that is to find out the potentials of teachers using problem-based-learning in the development of creative writing skills in the selected secondary School; to Explore the challenges teachers face while using problem-based learning to develop creative writing skills in the selected School; and to determine whether problem-based learning method improves creative writing skills in the English language in the selected secondary School. To achieve these objectives, the study adopted the Socio- Constructivism theory by Levi Vygotsky, and a Case study research design. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews, and focus group discussions. The qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. In summary, the potential of using problem-based learning in the development of creative writing skills in the English language include: enhanced teamwork, creativity, oral and written communication, Critical thinking and analysis, enhancement of problem-solving abilities and self-directed learning enhances lifelong learning skills. Second, the challenges faced by teachers while using problem-based learning to develop creative writing skills among the learners include: time-consuming challenges, assessment challenges, it makes the teachers redundant, requires competent teachers, financial constraints, it is suitable for gifted students. Third, the strategies that can be adopted to improve creative writing skills in the English language. These strategies entailed the use of continuous exercises, refresher courses for the teachers, collaborative teaching, provision of adequate resources, scaffolding for the learners, use of ICT as well as of dictionaries to look out for complicated words. The study recommended that the teachers, head teachers, and School administrators should (i) enhance teamwork and interpersonal skills because creative writing and innovativeness, builds confidence and enhances greater understanding (ii) Address the challenges of assessment anxiety that tend to hinder students enhanced creative writing in English language in MHS in Wakiso district. | en_US |
