Prevalence and radiological patterns of Trochanteric Femur Fractures in adults with Femur fractures seen at Mulago National Referral Hospital

Abstract

Introduction: Trochanteric Femur fractures (TFF) are some of the most common fractures of the hip especially in the elderly with osteoporotic bones, usually due to trivial trauma. These fractures are usually due to high energy injuries in the young adults. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and patterns of trochanteric femoral fractures in Mulago National Referral Hospital (MNRH). This was a cross sectional study that recruited 230 patients with femur fractures from November 2022 and May 2023. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect information on social demographics that included age and sex. The radiological patterns of TFF were determined from the CT scans done for the patients with these fractures in Mulago National referral Hospital. Results. In total 230 patients with femur fractures were recruited and 26 patients had TFF accounting for 11% of patients with femur fractures. Majority of the patients were elderly and sustained the fractures secondary to falls. The commonest fracture pattern was the AO type 31A2 which is an unstable fracture involving the lateral wall
