Abstract

Busoga occupies approximately 8,500 square kilometres in eastern Uganda, within the East African interlacustrine zone. The sub-region is defined by four major water boundaries: the Victoria Nile (west), Lake Victoria/Nalubaale (south, ~68,800 km² — Africa's largest lake), the River Mpologoma (east), and Lake Kyoga (north). This near-complete water encirclement created natural defensive advantages, shaped trade networks, and profoundly influenced the spiritual imagination and livelihood strategies of the Basoga people. Y.K. Lubogo opens his History with precision: the Basoga understood their territory as a defined, complete, and bounded region with clear ancestral rights — not merely an administrative unit imposed by others.
