Entrepreneurship Training Programs in Uganda Prisons Service: A case study of Luzira Prisons

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate approaches for effective implementation of entrepreneurship training programs in Uganda Prisons Service. The study was guided by four specific objectives which were to identify challenges of entrepreneurship training programs, to identify the opportunities of entrepreneurship training programs, examine the modes of delivering entrepreneurship training programs and an appropriate approach to effective implementation of entrepreneurship training programs in Uganda prisons. The study adopted across sectional research design which was quantitative in nature. A sample size of 98 was reached using simple random sampling method. Both primary and secondary data was collected during the study. A structured instrument was utilized to collect data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that a number of entrepreneurship training programs in Luzira group of prisons were affected by various challenges including inmate’s lack of enough equipment, courses not specifically meeting the needs of an offender, inappropriate training methodologies; and few trainers. Findings of the study also revealed that there existed various opportunities of entrepreneurship training programs in vocational skills training in Livestock and Crop farming, bricklaying work and carpentry. Findings of the study also revealed that the main modes used to deliver entrepreneurship training programs in Luzira group of prisons was motivation of inmates through paid activities to improve their welfare. And the best approach for effective implementation of entrepreneurship training programs was focusing on promotion of employment opportunities. The prisons management should increase employment opportunities related to the training acquired and provide equipment necessary for execution of entrepreneurship training.
