| dc.description.abstract | The author was attached to Muni University (MU), which is located in northwestern Uganda. The University owns and operates an extensive portfolio of buildings, land, vehicles and equipment that are utilized to deliver its core mandate of teaching and research. It was established in 2013 to be a model University with a mission of providing quality education, generating knowledge, promoting innovation and empowering communities for transformation.
The aim of this field attachment was to develop the student’s skills to identify study issues in management of construction projects, collect data from various sources, analyse the data and present findings in a logical way.
The project ‘Construction of Perimeter Fence at Muni University’s Faculty of Technoscience’ has been one Muni University’s largest projects costed at UGX. 2,256,195,859 and funded by Government of Uganda. The contract was awarded to M/s K. G. Adubango Construction and Engineering Works Limited. The Project was supervised and managed by the technical team at the University’s Estates and Works Department.
The main objective of this study was to identify the major challenges on the construction project, their likely causes, and effects on the overall performance of the project. The major challenges faced on this project included encroachment across boundaries, delays in relocation of utilities, design reviews/adjustments, difficulty in obtaining adequate supplies of some specified materials, unstable weather conditions, intermittent electricity power and limited development funding. Despite the many challenges enumerated, the project management team was able to review the designs to accommodate the client’s requirements, open boundaries and resolve complainants.
The author learnt that project analysis and control were very essential in mitigating many of the management challenges that could arise during the construction project execution process. | en_US |
