    Abstract
As organizations go online, a number of advantages are realized and as a result academic institutions have not been left behind in this move. However most of the techniques organizations have used to guard against unauthorized system access have been found lacking and as a result many disastrous unauthorized access have been reported. This is worsened by the fact that applications used to break into systems are now easily accessed in some shops and the Internet. The interest of this work is to adopt an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for academic institutions to provide early detection and prevent network intrusion. The idea is to provide an integrated system that will minimize the weaknesses of the different intrusion prevention techniques while putting to the most the strength of each of them. We define IDS, discuss the different IDS types, architecture, compare different IDS’s and look at an effective implementation strategy.
