Teamwork and organizational commitment as correlates of employee performance in Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery
Abstract
The purpose of study was to establish the relationship between teamwork and organizational commitment, as correlate of employee performance. The study was guided by three objectives that is to say; to establish the relationship between teamwork, and organizational commitment as correlate of employee performance, and lastly to establish the challenges faced by teaching staff at Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery. The study was a correlation, cross-sectional survey design involving both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Purposive, stratified random and simple random sampling techniques were the strategies used to select the respondents in the study where a self-administered questionnaire and interview guide were conducted on them. The study objectives were tested using Pearson Correlation Coefficient Index. The findings of the study revealed no relationship between staff teamwork, organizational commitment and employee performance. Then lastly findings revealed that both staff and students are faced with many challenges. It was concluded that there is no relationship between staff teamwork, organizational commitment and employee performance. Lastly, it was concluded that both teaching staff and students are faced with many challenges not limited to staff poor pay among others. It was therefore recommended that if employee performance is to be improved at Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery, the principal, deputy principal, head of departments immediate supervisors should come up with policies that make teaching staff feel recognized and appreciated. The school administrators like, head of departments, principal should come up with a policy of effective monitoring and supervision of teaching staff. And finally that if the challenges facing teaching staff are to be overcome and their performance improved, government through the ministry of education and sports, the school principal should come up with programs that widen the revenue source to the school to ensure that staff remuneration and motivation is improved in order to realize employee performance.
