Contemporary Ugandan art and the ctrique on corruption? A look at Mutebi's strategies, symbolisms and symbols.
Abstract
Some contemporary artists in Uganda have converted traditional objects and activities into a pointed vocabulary which they use to critique government and governance. Fred Kato Mutebi is active in this area. In this paper I have read and contextualised the politics in some of his works. I have traced the intricate link between his visual expression, public opinion and political activism. I have probed the ways in which an artist has transformed cultural symbol[ism]s into sites for political activism.
