| dc.description.abstract | The research study was aimed at finding out the role of the World Organization in the promotion of health in Uganda. It looked at the World Health Organization in Uganda and its contribution to the promotion of health in the country. Increasingly, health is being viewed as a threat to human security and has become a global security concern. Millions of people die every year from health related issues. The spread of disease has also been escalated by the fact that nowadays, people can easily travel across borders due to the phenomenon of globalization. A lot of disease is being transmitted through this cross border traveling. This has increasingly called for global action in the fight against disease and health related problems. That is why organizations like the World Health Organization have been set up over the years to increase the global cooperation in the fight against disease. The World Health Organization is dedicated to the improvement of the health of people all over the world. It provides all kinds of assistance to states in order that their health systems flourish. In developing states like Uganda where the national capacity to provide adequate health services is weak, this kind of assistance comes in handy. Uganda cannot afford to provide all its citizenry adequate and sufficient health services. Through its country office in Uganda, the World Health Organization has been able to assist the Ugandan health sector to boost its health systems and standards. This assistance ranges from technical and advisory assistance on health issues to assistance in policy planning and implementation. This has helped to tremendously improve on the state capacity to provide better health services. Health care centers have been built, medical personnel have been trained and the spread of disease has been curbed. The study was carried out using the qualitative method of research with The World Health Organization in Uganda as a case study. This allowed for deep investigation into the work of the organization, its achievements, challenges and recommendations for the future. A number of key informants were interviewed within the Organization as well as from the Ministry of Health. There was clear focus on practices of the organization like policy implementation, human resource practices, management and organizational issues, organizational culture and the processes of change. This enabled the holistic understanding of the way the World Health Organization carries out its role against the background of Uganda’s Socio- economic and health environment. Therefore, how the organization works and what it does are at the center of this study. The study also allows us to understand the role and necessity of the emerging transnational organizations in the world today. The need for countries to join together in the fight against common problems; social, economic and political in nature. It is getting harder for states to act independently without the support of other states. The transnational organizations have been viewed as friendlier options to deal with especially those that have no political agendas and affiliations. The World Health Organization is one such organization and shows how successful transnational organizations can be. | en_US |
