Intellectual capital management for transformation of Makerere University (2021 - 2024)
Abstract
This study explored the role of intellectual capital management in the transformation of Makerere University. Specific objectives were; to explore intellectual asset alignment practices for transformation, the business development strategy for transformation, the competitiveness technology for transformation and the business-value assessment for transformation at Makerere University. A qualitative case study design was adopted, data was collected using an interview-guide with nineteen (19) participants from the colleges of College of Education and External Studies, Health Sciences, Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, Veterinary Medicine, Animal, Resource and Bio-Security, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Computing and Information Science and Intellectual Capital Management Office. Findings showed that intellectual asset alignment practices, business development strategy, the competitiveness technology and the business-value assessment for transformation at Makerere University had different roles played in the different colleges. It was concluded that there was enhanced decision making, quality control, accountability and strategic alignment of goals. The practices might not be regarded as modest attributes that characterize social, economic and general well-being of the university but an essential indicator of the zeal to live in transformative environment with the education sector, Makerere University's business development strategy for transformation reflects the operational, cultural, and digital transformations the university goes through to adapt to market changes. The Internet and machine learning have the potential to drastically alter how staff and students conduct business, communicate with one another both inside and outside the university, and compete on a worldwide scale at Makerere University and Business-value assessment through digital technologies have been essential for increasing the competitiveness and productivity of businesses at Makerere University. The study recommended that management of Makerere University should have an intellectual capital management policy replacing the intellectual property management one.
