| dc.description.abstract | This study was concerned with establishing the relationship between early marriage and school dropout rates among girl children taking a case of Kibaale. Interview guide were distributed to 14 household heads and 8 competent members of the household who were available. In addition 13 girls themselves were also interviewed. However Key informant interviews were conducted with District Education Officer in charge of gender and Community affairs, Probation and Social Welfare Officers. Questionnaires were administered to 40 primary school teachers in Burora and Kyengabi Primary School to get information for the study. Nevertheless documentary review comprised of enrollment records and attendance registers of children in Burora and Kyengabi Primary Schools to confirm the records of enrollment. The study found out that the school based factors which cause young girls to drop out of school include harassment by their teachers, girl child wearing torn uniform, and feeling that they are too mature to be in school, factors which are not school based that cause young girls to drop out of school include; parental pressures so as to get bride wealth and this is common in UPE schools, and old girls being laughed at by the young ones. The study further revealed that although girls in Kibaale district get married at an early age they are not booked before completing P.L.E somebody may wonder how they get married. It was recommended that Teachers should stop corporal punishments and they resort to psychological punishment like making the girl who has done wrong sweep the class alone. This may be a punishment but to some extent teaching the young girls to work, Primary school girls should be given counselling services when they don’t perform well. They should be told that success is not measured by the marks a person has got but the effort you put in to get the marks you have scored, the girl child pupils should at least be given enough parental care. Therefore, local councils must enforce the laws guiding the young children, and local leaders need to emphasise a laws that protect children’s rights, Policy to cater for the girl children who give birth should be allowed to get back to school and this should be a government policy, and lastly the public should be sensitised that education has no age limit.
