The right to adequate food in Uganda : a case study of IDPs in Ngariam sub-county, Katakwi District
Abstract
The study investigated issues pertaining to realization of the right to adequate food of IDPS in Ngariam Sub County. Katakwi district the specific objectives of the study were: to examine the existing relevant human rights instruments in the implementation of the right of adequate food of IDPS; to examine the suitability of strategies used in the implementation of the right to adequate food; to assess the obstacles to effective implementation of the right to food and to suggest appropriate ways for overcoming the challenges in the implementation of the right to food in Ngariam sub county. The study use questionnaires as the major research tool and interview guides. Data collection was then followed by analysis and interpreta5tion of findings. The study findings indicated that the strategies used in implementation of the right to adequate food are fairly suitable according to IDPS. While the other stakeholders consider them to be reasonably suitable. The study identified in security as the major obstacle to attainment of the right to adequate food. Lastly. it was established that the participation in agriculture remains a key strategy being used by IDPS in the realization of their right to adequate food. This study concludes that there is poor implementation of existence of human rights instruments and frameworks. The current strategies are useful but inadequately implemented; the major to the effective implementation of this right is political instability and participation in agriculture is a viable strategy for IDPS to realize the right to adequate food. Recommendation include; designing clear policy guidelines to strengthen the implementation of the right to adequate food, availing agricultural inputs to IDPS inclusion of IDPS while designing strategies for implementation of their right to adequate food. Insuring that road networks are improved and providing security.
