    Evaluation of the effectiveness of employee training programmes in Uganda’s commercial banks, a case study of centenary bank

    Abstract
    The major aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the training programmes in Centenary Bank. The objectives of the study were to investigate the various existing training programmes of Centenary Bank, to assess employee perception on training effectiveness in Centenary Bank, and to find out the challenges relating to the various training programmes conducted by Centenary Bank. The research was carried out in the various branches, and the Centenary Bank Head Office using descriptive research. Purposive sampling method in choosing the respondents to collect data using questionnaires and interview methods were used. To analyze the collected data, Statistical Package for Social Scientist (SPSS) software was used, and the findings were presented using frequency tables. The research findings revealed that on objective one it was concluded that majority of the respondents agreed to the existence of both on-job and off-job training programmes at Centenary Bank, but with little knowledge on the performance of proper training needs assessment before, and post training evaluations and follow ups after the various trainings were done. On objective two it was concluded that majority of the respondents agreed that the training had a positive impact on the work, skills, knowledge, and performance of employees at Centenary Bank. On third objective, was concluded that major challenge faced was low Top Management’s support in the various training conducted by the centenary bank and majority pointed out that training received was not enough in terms of frequency, hence rendering it ineffective. The study recommended that Centenary Bank should strengthen management towards training, starting from increased efforts in Training Needs Assessment of trainees, Management involvement and show of support towards employee training, increasing frequency of the trainings and improve the post training evaluations and follow ups to ensure that issues are timely picked up and addressed.
