Inventory management practices, a case study of Uganda electricity distribution company limited (UEDCL)

Abstract

Inventory pilferage and increasing stockouts leads to shortfalls in meeting the revenue performance targets at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company limited (UEDCL). This study sought to investigate the level of implementation of inventory management practices in UEDCL. The study used process assessment and interview methods of data collection. The study results showed that inventory planning is implemented more than inventory control at UEDCL, although there are several challenges associated with their implementation which has resulted into high costs of production and financial losses. The study concluded that for the inventory management practices to effectively make a positive impact on organizational performance and reduce financial losses, effective record management is essential. It recommended that a policy framework should be developed to facilitate faster Implementation of the best inventory management practices such as MRP and inventory staff should be further trained in the area of inventory control management that will empower them to be in charge for smooth running of the inventory management activities or program.
