The purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of employee remuneration at National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) in Uganda. Special focus was on examining the forms of Employee remuneration at NWSC, examining the level of satisfaction of employee remuneration, the contribution of employee remuneration at NWSC, challenges affecting employee remuneration, and proposing strategies for improving employee remuneration at NWSC. The study focused on 5 branches i.e. Bwaise, Nansana, Ntinda, Kyaliwajjala and City Center which were purposively selected. This was because of their location, and ease of reach. The 5 branches constituted of a total population of 308 employees from whom 174 employees were selected to participate in filling in a questionnaire, 10 managerial level employees were selected for interviewing, and 5 Focus Group Discussions were also selected for the lower and middle level staff. The study employed a mixed research approach to collect data. Under the quantitative approach, the study had a sample size of 174, out of which 165 employees were able to fill in the questionnaire. The study employed a simple random sampling technique which yielded a response rate of 95%. Under the qualitative approach, the researcher carried out interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) where by a sample size of 10 interviews and 5 FGDs targeting a total of 35 employees was selected to collect data. The study employed a purposive sampling technique which yielded a total response rate of 82%. The researcher managed to conduct 7 interviews, and 5 FGDs which had a total of 30 respondents and they yielded a response rate of 70% and 86% respectively. The descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data using Microsoft Excel and STATA. The analysis aimed at computing frequencies and percentages to show distribution of responses on different questions. The study found that NWSC has several forms of employee remuneration with the most outstanding being Medical Insurance (97%), Gratuity (92%), salary (91%), among others. The study also found that despite the presence of the forms of remuneration at NWSC, employees are highly dissatisfied with majority of the forms. This is in terms of the timeliness of the pay, the fairness of the pay, and its competitiveness. The study revealed that employee remuneration contributes to employee motivation (49%), job satisfaction (35%), job commitment (36%), employee welfare (45%), and employee performance (36%), and a lack of it will therefore result into employees feeling demotivated, dissatisfied, discontent, and unable to develop themselves personally. Furthermore, the study revealed that there are several challenges affecting the remuneration system, with majority agreeing that the pay is low compared to the standard of living (86%), there is no uniformity in the remuneration system (70%), and there is no fairness in pay (60%). The study recommends that NWSC should ensure fairness of the remuneration system, transparency, timeliness of pay, revision of the salary structure and bonuses given, benchmarking from other sector players within the same industry, modifying salaries based on the economic situation, and ensuring that remunerations are paid based on performance.en_US
