The sculpture was commissioned by the students’ guild. The lower part was inspired by Michelangelo’s unfinished marble sculpture piece in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The sculpture is presented as a man holding a female figure standing on top of the rock. The man carries in his hand a book that has been placed on top of the rock on which a female figure holding the weighing scale stands. The sculpture tends to suggest the students’ desire to ensure that peace and justice is practiced in the student leadership in the exercise of duties assigned to them by the students’ body. Behind the sculpture is an abstracted map of Africa executed in metal. On the right hand side of the map is a circle inspired by the sun. This symbolizes the location of Uganda and the location of Makerere University as the center intellectual enlightenment and innovation. By presenting an old man holding the stand on which the female figure stands upright with a book, the artist reminds the viewer of the sacrifice that parents/guardians make to send their children to Makerere University. In presenting the female figure standing on top of the book, the artist reminds the viewer that their core mandate of coming to the University is to pursue knowledge not only for themselves but to the wider African continent and the sun standing for the global world. The work is produced in concrete.en_US
