Installation of two lines of 2500mm diameter Armco culverts at Aturukuku river along Bison-Juba road in Tororo Municipal council
Abstract
River Aturukuku is located along Bison- Juba road2 km from town centre of Tororo Municipal Council. Constructed in 2010 by installing three lines of 1500mm diameter Armco culverts and the head walls and wing walls constructed using hardcore and cement-sand mortar, Over the years as a result of increase of traffic, inclemental weather that lead to flooding, the wing walls and head walls developed cracks that kept increasing and eventually on the 16th May 2020, the headwalls of the culverts were washed away. This subsequently led to the washing away of the gravel backfilled materials on the culverts and the bridge became very difficult for the people to cross.
The purpose of the project was to install a two lines of 8m 2500mm diameter Armco culverts wide enough to effectively serve both the current and future vehicular and pedestrian population and construct the headwalls and wing walls with reinforced concrete of class 25 to prevent collapse like the previous headwalls.
