dc.description.abstractThe study seeks to establish the role of human resource practices on lectures’ performance at Kampala University, due to complaints from stake holders concerning lecturers’ performance in that institution (Kampala University annual performance report, 2010). The study objectives include; to establish the effect of compensation on lecturers’ performance at Kampala University, to assess the effects of staff development on lecturers’ performance at Kampala University, and to analyze the effect of general staff welfare on the performance of lecturers at Kampala University. The study is guided by a cross sectional survey design, which employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Respondents include 74 lecturers; the 938 students from all faculties, plus the 21 administrators for Kampala University Ggaba campus, totaling to 1033 respondents. Convenience sampling technique is used, while questionnaires and interviews are the main instruments of this study. The findings are arrived at using Pearson correlation (r), and they are; the effect of compensation on lecturers’ performance at Kampala University is (r) = 0.650**, the effect of staff development on lecturers’ performance at Kampala University (r) is 0.735* *, while the effect of general staff welfare on lecturers’ performance (r) is 0.799**. It is concluded that; there is a positive correlation between compensation and lecturers’ performance at Kampala University, there is a positive correlation between staff development and lecturers’ performance at Kampala University, and that Staff general welfare positively correlates with lecturers’ performance at Kampala University. It is recommended that; compensation of lecturers’ services at Kampala University should follow the principle of “more work results into more pay” and should always be prompt. Kampala University management should also ensure that staff development practices like training, promotion, and delegation, among others are seriously enforced so as to boost the lecturers’ performance. Finally the university management should ensure that general staff welfare is elevated to the right standards through ensuring the presence of health care facilities, housing, and allowances, among others.en_US
