| dc.description.abstract | This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the LRA rebellion on the educational
facilities in government-aided primary schools in Gulu Municipality and to suggest
recommendations to guide future educational planning. The study was specifically done in the four divisions of Gulu Municipality namely: Laroo, Pece, Layibi and Bar-dege. The education facilities constituted the dependent variables such as classrooms, library, instructional materials, furniture and sanitation facilities. The independent variables were characterised by displacement of pupils, teachers and parents, insecurity, destruction of school facilities, displacement of schools and burning of schools.
The study was conducted by cross-sectional survey. Data was collected during the month of November 2009. Questionnaires were used to gather data from teachers and pupils of the selected schools. Guided interviews were used to collect information from staff of Gulu district local government, head teachers, and the Non-Governmental organisations. Focus group discussions were held with parents and community leaders. The sample size consisted of 154 respondents comprising learners, teachers, LCs, NGOs, district leaders and officials from the Education Department.
The data was analyzed using SPSS from which graphs and charts were generated. The study established that Primary schools today face challenges of poor facilities, inadequate classrooms and learning materials and there is clearly a shortage of furniture. This study therefore recommends that the government seeks a total end to the Lord’s Resistance Army rebellion. In conclusion therefore, Government should consider fully covering the costs of learning in Gulu Municipality for all pupils for a certain period of time, and address common gaps in regard to educational facilities. | en_US |
