The role of value Engineering in enhancing the performance of the Kira-matugga road construction project.
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the role of value engineering in enhancing the performance of the Kira-Matugga road construction project. Value engineering is a systematic approach to improving project outcomes by identifying cost-effective alternatives and optimizing processes without compromising quality and functionality.
The main objective was to evaluate the impact of value engineering on four critical aspects: cost performance, project timeliness, quality performance, and environmental benefits. Specific objectives include analyzing the cost savings achieved through value engineering, determining its effect on project timelines, assessing quality improvements, and investigating the environmental advantages of value engineering initiatives.
The methodology combined a comprehensive review of project documents with site visits and observations. Data collection involved analyzing site meeting minutes, progress reports, and design documents, as well as conducting field observations to assess ongoing construction activities and their relation to value engineering. Data analysis techniques included cost-benefit analysis, critical path analysis, defect analysis, and life cycle assessment to determine the broader impact of value engineering on project performance.
Key findings indicate that value engineering initiatives on the Kira-Matugga project led to significant cost savings, timely project activities’ completion, improved quality, and environmental sustainability. Notable examples include design revisions to reduce construction costs, adjustments to the road layout to address right-of-way constraints, and environmentally conscious measures such as sandbag installation to manage stormwater and tree planting along road corridors to mitigate carbon emissions.
The study also highlights the importance of collaborative project management, where stakeholders contribute to value engineering strategies. The findings demonstrate that by integrating value engineering across all project phases, the Kira-Matugga project achieved a balance between cost efficiency, timely completion of some project activities, quality performance, and environmental sustainability. This research contributes valuable insights into how value engineering can be effectively applied to road construction projects, offering a holistic perspective on enhancing project outcomes.
