Improvement of health services at Mulago national referral hospital and the city of Kampala project (MKCCAP).
Abstract
This report thoroughly explains the construction practices that the author participated in as the
main contractor’s Quantity Surveyor during the execution of construction works for the
improvement of Health services at Mulago National Referral Hospital and the city of Kampala.
After the completion of this project, it will be able to provide super-specialized healthcare, training
and conduct research in line with the requirements of Ministry of Health (MoH).
The project whose total cost was Uganda Shillings thirteen billion five hundred seventy-one
million one hundred ninety-four thousand four hundred fifty-six only (UGX 13,571,194,456) VAT
inclusive was implemented by Roko Construction Company as the Main Contractor from 29th
September 2022 and will be completed on 28th March 2024.
The project consisted of face lifting the engineering department, refurbishment and remodeling of
the gate and gate house at police exit, construction of a new waste holding bay, external works,
medical gases, mechanical and electrical works, air conditioning, ICT installations and external
works of paving and landscaping and other refurbishment works in different blocks.
It is a requirement that a student of Post Graduate Diploma in Construction Project Management
of Makerere University relates his participation in a construction project with the knowledge
obtained in this course. On this project, the author was assigned a number of duties including
measurements of work on site by the main contractor and sub-contractors, preparing valuations
and payment certificates, preparing procurement schedules, preparing construction work
programs, supervision of sub-contractors on site among others. Throughout the execution of these
tasks, the author was able to apply the various construction project management skills and
knowledge obtained during the course as expounded in this report.
This report discusses the project background and details, procurement and execution of works,
challenges encountered, solutions and lessons learnt, conclusion and recommendations drawn by
the author.
