The role of gender socialisation in choosing nursing as a career: a case study of Arua School of Comprehensive Nursing

Abstract

This study investigates how gender socialization impacts the career choices of students at Arua School of Comprehensive Nursing, with a special focus on how gender roles influence their decision to pursue nursing. Gender role socialization is when people are taught what roles are suitable for their gender, which can limit their career options based on these learned roles. In the context of this nursing school, the research has identified that more females enrol than males and seeks to understand the reasons behind this trend. The study also explores how gender socialization shapes the decision-making process when it comes to choosing a nursing career. Methodologically, it employs a qualitative approach using structured interviews, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews to gather data. The findings indicate a predominance of female enrolment due to a genuine passion for caregiving, particularly to children, the sick, and the elderly, as well as a desire to serve the community. Gender-based advice from family members and friends with medical backgrounds also strongly influences students' career choices, reflecting the impact of traditional gender expectations. Overall, this research sheds light on the role of gender socialization in students' career decisions at Arua School of Comprehensive Nursing as a case study.
