dc.description.abstract | The study examined the role of performance management practices in improving employee productivity at Kyambogo University considering a case of Academic Staff. It established the performance management practices in place, assessed the effectiveness performance management practices in improving employee productivity and identified strategies that could be designed to improve employee productivity. The study used a case design and qualitative research approach. The study population were members of University Council, top Management of the University and Lecturers. Data was collected by use of interview guides and document review. The study findings revealed the role of performance management practices in improving employee productivity.
Findings indicated training and staff development, conducive work environment, coaching and mentorship, rewarding and staff motivation as practices to improve employee productivity amongst academic staff. The existing performance management practices were effective in improving employee productivity as reflected in a good number of academic staff that acquired masters and PhD qualifications. In addition, performance appraisals were regularly conducted and the results were utilized to inform subsequent decisions for programming and action. It was therefore, recommended that; Kyambogo University maintains the current performance management practices because they were identified as key for acquisition of desired skills and knowledge by academic staff. In terms of strategies, there is implementation of existing education policies and regulations, implementation of Kyambogo University Strategic Plan 2020/21 – 2024/25, development of a suitable human resource management plan, maintaining a suitable work environment and improving the rewards system. It was concluded that the different performance management practices that have been analysed were positive towards skills development and acquisition of knowledge by academic staff. The performance practices indicated that academic staff were motivated and encouraged to do research, innovate and publish. Therefore, Kyambogo University should maintain the current performance management practices with an aim to improve and sustain productivity of its academic staff. | en_US |
