Perceived organisational support, employee engagement and organisational citizenship behaviour among health workers in selected Kampala city authority health centers
Abstract
The purpose was to examine the relationship between employee engagement, perceived organisational support and organisational citizenship behaviour among employees of selected KCCA health centers around Kampala. A quantitative approach was used in this study. Wherein particular a cross-sectional and correlational research designs were adopted. The study sample size comprised of 176 respondents. Quota sampling was used to recruit respondents, with quotas based on the health centers. Data was collected using already designed standardized questionnaires that were given to the selected respondents. Data was analyzed using the IBM statistical package for social scientists [SPSS version 22]. Pearson (r) product moment correlation coefficient was used to test hypothesis 1, 2 and 3. The mediation analysis for hypothesis 4 was done using the conditional process analysis (PROCESS) tool. Results showed that there was a significant positive association between perceived organisational support and engagement (r(174) = .319, p < .0.01).There was a significant positive association between engagement & organisational citizenship behaviour (r(174) = .288, p < .0.01).There was a significant positive association between perceived organisational support and organisational citizenship behaviour (r(174) = .315, p < .0.01). The indirect effect of engagement on the relationship between perceived organisational support & organisational citizenship behaviour was significant (LL-UL CI= .0282-.4623).These findings are in line with the social exchange theory and the three factor model of work engagement hence supporting previous studies that established the relevance of these theories in relation to the variables. From the study findings, there is need to carry out a wider national survey on these variables within other organizations and it’s recommended that organizations should put emphasis on practices which promote and increase employee engagement because employee engagement has high influence on organisational citizenship behaviour.
