This report was drafted as part of the requirements for completion of a Post Graduate Diploma in Construction Project Management at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, Makerere University. It contains the engineering design and construction supervision of the Periodic maintenance of Kibuye – Mpala road (22Km) under the Uganda National Road Authority. Kampala – Entebbe road (40Km) is a paved national road leading to Uganda’s only International Airport with the Kibuye – Mpala Road section (22Km) which had dilapidated, with localized potholes along the entire section. Furthermore, numerous drainage bottlenecks most especially at Bata bata (Km 3+460) and Zana near Roofings (Km 5+140) had emerged leading to storm water flowing over the road pavement during peak flows which usually effects its functionality. The challenges cited above showed that a periodic maintenance intervention was required in order to to revamp the performance of this road which is a national treasure to Uganda. The main objective of the periodic maintenance intervention, was to improve on the road performance which in turn leads to an increase in the road user satisfaction as well as increase the road design life by 7 (seven) more years as funds are being solicited for reconstruction. The scope of works entailed; construction of an Asphalt Overlay on sections where the pavement structure was still sound, Pothole patching and shoulder repairs on moderately damaged sections prior Asphalt overlay and full width reconstruction of terribly damaged sections with a Sub base of 200mm thick G30 Mechanically Modified gravel and Base layer of 150mm thick CRR – Course Type prior to the Asphalt overlay works, Replacement of vandalized and damaged road furniture, Road marking, Replacing and repairing of drainage systems along the road project. The Contract sum for the Periodic maintenance of Kibuye – Entebbe Road (22Km) was UGX. 43,949,631,918 VAT inclusive. Therefore, the candidate played a Project Managerial role during the execution of the periodic maintenance project. However, it should be noted that at the time of compiling this report the project was still ongoing and the candidate concentrated on writing about what had been executed at that time.en_US
