Prosecution case management information system (PROCAMIS) for DPP (Uganda)

Abstract

MIS are used to enable timely and effective decisions for planning, directing and controlling organizational activities. The directorate of public prosecutions was faced with huge amounts of data that come in from various regional stations, the process of updating them was tiresome and some information in the process was lost. This project was set up to develop an online system that will enable easy management, co-ordination and facilitation of cases. To accomplish the objective a four step methodology was adopted with steps as data collection, system analysis and design, system implementation and system testing. In data collection we collected data using methods such as interviews, questionnaires, observation and the library search method. In system analysis and design we used DFDs and ERDs for process and data modeling respectively. In system implementation we used different techniques such as HTML, MySQL, Apache, PHP, Java Script and CSS. System testing was done with the help of test data used while running the system to ensure the reliability of the system before implementation. In conclusion PROCAMIS is able to capture, store as well as update records about suspects and case proceeding details online. It can also post this information to an online database and allows information retrieval by a use of a search tool and automatic report generation. However efficiency is not a guarantee. For instance it doesn't capture biometric information about suspects. The researchers recommended that more research be done in line with this project so that a more advanced system that can embed more functionalities like capturing biometrics of suspects, GIS capabilities, GPS among others that have not been tackled as a result of time and limited resources is developed.
