dc.description.abstract Something unprecedented is happening in the global economy, and it is happening faster than most governments, institutions, and analysts have been able to process. In the first two decades of the twenty-first century, the world witnessed the consolidation of the internet economy. E-commerce, social media, mobile computing, and cloud infrastructure became foundational to how commerce, communication, and governance operate. Companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Alibaba, and Tencent accumulated market capitalizations larger than the entire GDP of most African nations. The internet transformed from a research tool to a global economic platform. But that transformation, as dramatic as it was, was merely the prelude. The revolution now underway is categorically different in nature and scope. It is not an extension of the digital economy. It is a restructuring of physical reality itself. Artificial intelligence systems are now performing tasks that, as recently as 2015, were considered uniquely and permanently human: diagnosing cancer from medical images, writing legal documents, generating original music, predicting protein structures that had stumped biologists for decades. OpenAI's GPT-4, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude represent not merely improved software but a genuine paradigm shift in what machines can do. The McKinsey Global Institute estimated in 2023 that generative AI could add between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion annually across industries globally — a figure that exceeds the GDP of every African nation combined.
