Challenges affecting the performance of graduate students at the College of Education and External Studies, Makerere University

Abstract

The general objective of the study was to examine the challenges facing graduate students and their impact on academic performance in the College of Education and External Studies (CEES) of Makerere University. Specifically, the study sought to establish the financial, family commitment and institutional support factors affecting the performance of graduate students in the CEES. Cross sectional and correlational research designs were employed using both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Data collected were presented using frequencies and percentages. The study findings showed that financial, family commitments and institutional support challenges greatly constrain the performance of graduate students within the CEES. The study concluded that; financial, institutional support and family commitments greatly constrain the performance of graduate students. The researcher recommended that; the college should provide financial support to graduate students as a way of enhancing their students. The college should create a conducive learning environment for instance providing enough text books to graduate students to enhance their learning. Graduate students should strike a balance between family commitments and studies.
