Design and construction supervision of pipeline route of Kampala-Katosi Transmission Project
Abstract
This Technical report is submitted as part of the requirements for application for admission as a Corporate Member of Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers and for registration by the Engineers Registration Board of Uganda. It focuses largely on my roles on the Design of pipeline route of Kampala-Katosi Transmission Project, and Construction Monitoring of 51.4km Kampala- Entebbe Expressway. The pipeline section between Kyetume railway crossing at Mukono reservoir and Kampala-Jinja Highway crossing at Seeta has 5 major route options passing through varying conditions, while the pipeline route from Seeta town to the existing Naguru reservoir has one main route. Five route options were identified and subjected to various assessments and comparisons to determine the best route for the project. Route Option B was selected as preferred route because of minimal resettlement requirements, availability of road reserve along the route, most economical option and meets the project requirements. The design of the pipeline was done only for the selected route option while making use of the projected demands in 2027 and 2040 as spelled out in Kampala Water - Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Program. An indication of the current status of the construction phase is illustrated with emphasis on the expected outputs, challenges faced and proposed mitigation measures stated in the risk matrix. The construction of the 51.4km Kampala- Entebbe Expressway began in July 2012 and was commissioned in June 2018. The road is made up of three sections: the Expressway Main section, the Expressway Widening section along existing road corridors and the Munyonyo Spur Road. Construction work items included the roadway, structures (bridges, underpasses, overpasses, toll plazas and culverts), surface and sub-surface drainage, retaining walls and other ancillary works. I was privileged to be part of the Mott MacDonald team involved in the Construction Monitoring of the project.
