dc.description.abstractDatabases have become an integral part of almost all operations in every enterprise because of the growing computerisation of processes. Even previously uncomputerised processes generate so much information to the extent that any efforts to computerise them will result in the need to integrate the information into a database for ease of storage, access and distribution. Furthermore, enterprises are now operating in wide geographical locations that are interconnected into a Wide Area Network and this introduces a new dimension in database intercommunication that requires exploration of database operation beyond the Local Area Network. This project is aimed at the development of a distributed database system between locations across the Internet to enable synchronisation of information entered into the databases. We particularly focus on the process involving collection and processing of adverts on newspaper companies in Uganda. This has been achieved through the developed system and it is capable of ensuring that first, the processes within the advertising process in the branch office are streamlined, computerised and that there is synchronisation between the database at the primary site (the branch office) and the head office. In addition, it has introduced integration of an sms module for receiving adverts from clients in remote locations. The developed tool has been tested and validated by users in New Vision Printing and Publishing Company. The users found the system to be effective in terms of reducing the processing time of adverts and related tasks e.g., reports.en_US
