dc.description.abstract There has been a variance between the conceived and achieved goals in the design of computer aided learning tools. The lack of user-friendliness and flexibility have been some of the factors contributing to the failure of these tools in achieving the goals set by their developers. A user-centered approach to software development where usability is a key consideration in he success of the product was used in this project whereby a computer aided learning tool for normalization of relational schemata was developed. The objective of this project was not only to develop a tool that could normalize a set of functional dependencies describing a schema but also a tool that was user friendly. The developed tool has an in-built explanation mechanism for the processes, input and output requirements defining its user-friendliness. While it is not envisaged that the tool will replace the lecturer in a database systems course unit, it is hoped that it is going to be a good supplementary tool for delivery of knowledge in such a setting en_US
